As these examples show, free relative clauses can perform a variety of functions in the matrix clause, such as Subject, Direct Object, and Prepositional Complement.
Free relative clauses can perform the same grammatical functions as noun phrases, but they look like clauses by virtue of the fact that they always contain a tensed verb. In the examples above it is possible to explicitly mention the Head noun. Thus, we interpret (88) as in (96).
