To enroll in a community college, students must be 18 years of age or high school graduates. Students do not need to take specific courses or tests to enroll in community college. However, prior to registering, students may be required to take placement tests to determine the course level of math and English at which they will begin.
Many students attend community college with a plan to transfer to a four-year college. Students typically spend 2 years at a community college and then 2 years at the college to which they transfer. Students work with their community college counselor to ensure they are taking the correct transfer courses, and then usually transfer as juniors.
Those who do not plan to transfer may pursue an AA degree or certificate in many vocational fields with the goal of entering the workforce after community college.
